Independent Living Resources:

We focus on resources for older adults and individuals with disabilities in our service areas: Northeast Minneapolis, St. Anthony Village, and Southeast Minneapolis. All the resources we link are either free or offer a sliding scale fee for lower income folks.

If you need help finding an affordable resource we recommend calling one of the three senior nonprofits/block nurse programs listed under Help in the Neighborhood below.

Help in the Neighborhood

These senior organizations are the go-to for resources. They maintain networks of volunteers who can often help if you need chore or outdoor maintenance help. They also offer local transportation.

Serves seniors aged 60+, who live in Northeast Minneapolis, St. Anthony Village, Columbia Heights and New Brighton.

St. Anthony Park Area Seniors – 651-642-9052

Serves seniors aged 60+ who live in the St. Anthony Park in St. Paul and Falcon Heights west of Cleveland Avenue and all of Lauderdale.

Southeast Seniors – 612-331-2302

Serves seniors aged 65+ who live in Southeast Como, Marcy Holmes, Prospect Park and Nicollet Island/East Bank in Southeast Minneapolis.

Food Shelves

Homegrown Minneapolis

An updated list of food security options maintained by the City of Minneapolis. Includes a ArcGIS map of Minneapolis food shelves.

Hunger Solutions

Includes a Google map of Minnesota food shelves that is searchable by zip code and the Minnesota Food HelpLine. Call 1-888-711-1151 to learn more about food shelves, free meals, farmers’ markets, or other resources in your area.

Legal Support

The following services are offered through Volunteers of America Minnesota and Wisconsin. Services are offered on a sliding scale for those in financial need.

The Center for Excellence in Supported Decision Making (CESDM) – 952-945-4174

Support for older adults and adults with disabilities to maintain independence whenever possible through care plans and support systems that prevent unnecessary guardianship and conservatorship.

Estate & Elder Law Services (E&ELS) – 612-676-6300

Assistance with estate planning, incapacity planning, long-term care planning, and probate.

 

Groceries & Delivery

Eastside Neighborhood Services Senior Food Shelf – 612-788-9521

Serves seniors aged 55+ who live in Hennepin County. You can visit once per month. They offer delivery if you are homebound.

Help at Your Door – 651-642-1892

Provides grocery assistance, home support – interior or exterior, and transportation services. Service fee is based on income.

St. Anthony Park Area Seniors – 651-642-9052

Serves seniors aged 65+ who live in Southeast Como, Marcy Holmes, Prospect Park and Nicollet Island/East Bank in Southeast Minneapolis. Provides free Friday delivery from Speedy Mart.

Southern Anoka Community Assistance (SACA) Delivers – (763)789-2444

Serves Columbia Heights, Fridley, Hilltop, Spring Lake Park and NE Minneapolis. They deliver food shelf groceries to homebound seniors and adults with disabilities once a month.

Health Insurance Guidance

Community Action Partnership of Hennepin County’s (CAP-HC’s) Navigators – 952-697-1331

Serves uninsured and underinsured residents of Hennepin County. They offer in-person MNsure application assistance to determine eligibility for Medical Assistance, Minnesota Care, Tax Credits, and Qualified Health Care Plans.

Metropolitan Center for Independent Living’s (MCIL’s) Individual Advocacy – 651-321-8558

Navigating Social Security and how to apply, managing SSDI and SSI benefits. Understanding and applying for health care benefits such as Medical Assistance, MA for Employed People with Disabilities, Medicare, and using MNSure to shop for individual insurance plans.

The Senior Linkage Line – 1-800-333-2433

Minnesota’s federally designated State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) and provides free help with all issues related to Medicare.
